چکیده

The surface velocity of natural debris flows is one of the main physical parameters for developing effective disaster prevention techniques. The authors already presented the result of velocity vector field measurement of debris flow by the spatio temporal derivative space method. In this paper, we propose a multi resolution spatio temporal derivative space method, and apply the method to some real debris flow video images.

Chaotic advection of reacting substances: Plankton dynamics on a meandering jet

We study the spatial patterns formed by interacting populations or reacting chemicals under the influence of chaotic flows. In particular, we have considered a threecomponent model of plankton dynamics advected by a meandering jet. We report general results, stressing the existence of a smooth-filamental transition in the concentration patterns depending on the relative strength of the stirring...

Multivariate gait data have traditionally been challenging to analyze. Part 1 of this review explored applications of fuzzy, multivariate statistical and fractal methods to gait data analysis. Part 2 extends this critical review to the applications of artificial neural networks and wavelets to gait data analysis. The review concludes with a practical guide to the selection of alternative gait d...

An optimal parallel algorithm for the multiselection problem

Given a set S of n elements drawn from a linearly ordered set, and a set K = {k1, k2, . . . , kr} of positive integers between 1 and n, the multiselection problem is to select the kith smallest element for all values of i, 1 ≤ i ≤ r. We present a simple optimal algorithm to solve this problem that runs in O(n log r) time on the EREW PRAM with n1− processors, 0 < < 1.

EvIdent(TM): a functional magnetic resonance image analysis system

EvIdent (EVent IDENTification) is a user-friendly, algorithm-rich, exploratory data analysis software for quickly detecting, investigating, and visualizing novel events in a set of images as they evolve in time and/or frequency. For instance, in a series of functional magnetic resonance neuroimages, novelty may manifest itself as neural activations in a time course. The core of the system is an...

A note on the MST heuristic for bounded edge-length Steiner trees with minimum number of Steiner points

We give a tight analysis of the MST heuristic recently introduced by G.-H. Lin and G. Xue for approximating the Steiner tree with minimum number of Steiner points and bounded edge-lengths. The approximation factor of the heuristic is shown to be one less than the MST number of the underlying space, de ned as the maximum possible degree of a minimum-degree MST spanning points from the space. In ...
